The Dhaulagiri Round Trekking is a thrilling and adventurous high-altitude trek in Nepal, offering a complete circuit around the majestic Dhaulagiri Massif (8,167m). This trek takes you through rugged Himalayan landscapes, deep river valleys, and remote villages, offering panoramic views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Annapurna I (8,091m), Nilgiri (7,061m), and Tukuche Peak (6,920m). The trek also passes through the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve and remote cultural settlements of the Magar and Gurung communities, providing a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion. This journey is ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, adventure, and the challenge of a demanding circuit trek.
Duration & Difficulty
The trek generally takes 18–22 days, depending on pace and acclimatization. Classified as strenuous, it requires excellent physical fitness, prior trekking experience, and the ability to handle steep ascents, high-altitude passes, and rugged terrain.
Best Time to Trek
The best trekking seasons are autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May). These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and the best visibility for Himalayan panoramas. Winter trekking is possible but comes with risks of snow and cold temperatures, while monsoon season (June–August) is generally avoided due to heavy rainfall and landslide risks.
Permits & Regulations
Trekking in the Dhaulagiri region requires a Dhaulagiri Conservation Area Permit (DCAP) and a TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System). These permits are mandatory for regulated trekking and environmental conservation.
Accommodation & Food
Accommodation is provided in basic tea houses and lodges, offering simple but comfortable facilities. Food mainly includes Nepali staples like dal bhat, noodles, soups, and pancakes, with limited western options. Safe drinking water is available after boiling or purification.
Altitude & Safety
The trek reaches high points above 5,000 meters, such as French Pass (5,360m), so altitude sickness is a potential risk. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and rest days are essential. Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation is highly recommended.
Connectivity & Essentials
Connectivity is limited; Wi-Fi is rarely available in remote areas. Trekkers should carry solar chargers and sufficient Nepalese Rupees for lodges and essentials. Recommended gear includes warm clothing, trekking boots, sleeping bag, trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a first aid kit.

Good to Know – Dhaulagiri Round Trekking
-
Best Seasons to Trek:
The Dhaulagiri Round Trek is best done during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months, the skies are clear, temperatures are moderate, and the views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Nilgiri are at their best. Winter (December–February) brings cold nights and possible snow, while monsoon (June–August) can make trails slippery and dangerous due to rain and landslides. -
Altitude Awareness:
This trek crosses several high passes, including French Pass (5,360m) and Dhampus La (5,050m). Trekkers should be aware of altitude sickness risks and allow proper acclimatization days to reduce complications. -
Physical Fitness:
The trek is challenging to strenuous, suitable for experienced trekkers or those in good physical condition. Daily trekking can last 6–8 hours, with steep ascents, rocky paths, and glacier-fed rivers requiring stamina and balance. -
Permits Required:
Trekkers must obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card, which can be arranged in Pokhara or at the trailhead. -
Accommodation and Meals:
Along the route, teahouses and lodges offer basic rooms with shared bathrooms. Meals include dal bhat, noodles, soups, pancakes, and tea/coffee. Prices and menu variety reduce at higher elevations. -
Drinking Water:
Bottled water is available in villages, but using a reusable bottle with purification tablets or filters is recommended. Boiled water is commonly available in lodges for a small fee. -
Packing and Gears:
Essential items include layered clothing, a warm jacket, trekking boots, trekking poles, gloves, a hat, rain gear, a headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, a power bank, a first aid kit, and a sleeping bag for high-altitude nights. -
Transportation and Route:
The trek usually begins from Beni or Tatopani in the Annapurna region. The route passes through remote villages, alpine forests, rivers, and high mountain passes, offering both natural beauty and cultural encounters. -
Travel Insurance:
Comprehensive high-altitude trekking insurance is recommended, covering medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, and trek delays. -
Connectivity and Charging:
Mobile signals are available in some villages, but connectivity is limited near high passes. Most lodges provide charging facilities for a small fee, so carrying a power bank is advised. -
Highlight Experience:
Trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Tukuche peaks, the adventure of crossing multiple high passes, and the experience of trekking a less crowded, remote Himalayan trail that showcases Nepal’s rugged mountain beauty.
