Discovering the Offbeat Path: Gokyo Renjola Pass Trek

Gokyo Renjola Pass Trek beckons trekkers seeking a less-traveled path, diverging from the popular and commercial routes leading to Everest Base Camp (5,545 m). This trek offers a unique and immersive experience, away from the bustling crowds, with a blend of natural and cultural encounters awaiting exploration.

Traversing through the Gokyo Valley, Thame Valley, and Renjo-La Pass, the trail unfolds a panorama of natural wonders. Eastern mountains pierce the sky, revealing stunning views of emerald lakes and glaciers. The Renjo La pass (5,345 m) serves as a vantage point, providing breathtaking vistas of Mt. Everest and towering peaks such as Mt. Makalu (8,485 m), Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), and Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188 m). The trek encompasses captivating passes and traverses massive glaciers, including the Ngozumpa glacier, the region’s largest.

Enchanting Gokyo Valley: Five Lakes

The mystic Gokyo Valley is renowned for its enchanting chain of five lakes, guarded by colossal mountains in every direction. The reflections of these peaks in the pristine lakes create a surreal and awe-inspiring sight. Another highlight of the journey is the ascent to Gokyo Ri Peak (5,357 m), offering the ultimate vantage point for a 360-degree panoramic view of the Everest region. Revel in the sight of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Pumori, Lingtren, Chola Peak, Machherma Peak, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kusum Kangaru, and other peaks dominating the eastern Himalayan skyline.

Commencing the adventure with a 30-minute flight to Lukla, often dubbed one of the world’s most dangerous airports, the trek unfolds through Namche, Dole, Gokyo, Gokyo Ri, Renjo-La Pass, Lungden, and Thame Village. The journey’s highest points, Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) and Renjo-La Pass (5,345 m), provide an elevation spectacle, showcasing varied and lush vegetation due to the drastic elevation changes. Moreover, this trek offers the chance to encounter rare and endangered species such as Musk Deer, Wild Mountain Goat, Lophophorus, Snow Leopard, Pheasants, Mountain Hawk, and Snow Duck.

Embark on the Gokyo Renjo-La Pass trek for an extraordinary adventure, where each step reveals the untouched beauty of the Himalayas and offers a profound connection with the region’s diverse flora and fauna.

Outline Itinerary

We will be waiting for you at Kathmandu airport and will come with the typical Nepali flower garland occasion of you arriving in Nepal and continuing to drive from the airport to the hotel approximately 30 minutes by day and 20 minutes by night. When you reach the hotel, you will have welcome drinks with biscuits and then settle into your rooms. After settlement of your room you need to come back to the lobby for a briefing about trekking and tour as concerning to introduction with your trekking guide. When you’re finished briefing, continue to check your trekking or climbing equipment with a guide. But if you are arriving in Kathmandu at night, all those activities will be done the next day after food, meals, and breakfast.

You take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. It takes 40 minutes to reach Lukla from Khathmandu. You can start your trial with Lukla. It’s an easy and gentle first day from Lukla to Phakding, but you will see some verification of earthquake damage along this route and some lodges. Leaving Lukla, the trail drops, keeping it right at an unspecified junction to Chaurikharha. Follow the trail up into the village of Phakding, a collection of more than a dozen lodges.

From Phakding, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi valley north, rounding about through the pines about 100m above the west bank of the river. Check if accommodation is available before planning an overnight stop here. Crossing the Ghatte Khola, the trail climbs up over the point to the tiny village of Toktok. The trail then descends through pines to an attractive, multi-level waterfall and restaurant. You are now about a four-hour walk from Namche Bazaar. The trail cuts across to the west bank of Dudh Khosi on another suspension bridge.

Trekkers should timetable an ‘acclimatization day’ in Namche to avoid symptoms of AMS further up the trail. This doesn’t mean you have to stop walking – there are frequent short walks through the hills around Namche that will improve your fitness and help you adjust to the altitude without any dangerous increases in altitude. You could easily spend a day exploring the shops and sights of Namche and Chhorkung. You could also consider spending your second night in Khunde, Khumjung.

Heading north, you can take the easy path via Chhorkung or the steeper scenic trail via Khumjung. Whichever path you take, you will reach Sanasa, below Khumjung on the west side of the Dudh Khosi. A signpost on the lower trail claims that you can reach Tokyo in seven hours. You next reach Dole set at the mouth of the Phule Khola in a wide, densely forested valley. There are good views south towards Thamserku and Khantega peaks from several high points around the village. The pastoral setting and superior lodges make Dole a good place to stop for a mandatory rest and acclimatisation day.

Day 7 is another short day to limit your speed of climb. From Dole, it’s a steep climb out of the forest to a gradually more barren hillside, covered in Tundra grasses. Across the valley, you can make out the high path of the east bank trail from Gokyo to Portse. Continue uphill past a chorten past the village of Lhabarma, 30 minutes from Dole. From Lhabarma, the trail climbs gently past a large chorten to Luza. The trail continues to climb gently along the side of the valley. You’ll soon reach for chorten and flutering prayer flags on the outskirts of Machhermo.

On Day 8, you leave the foothills and enter the desolute tundra of the high mountains, en route to Gokyo. To start, climb steeply up a scrubby slope to a collection of chortens on the hilltop, then follow the ridge. After 30 minutes, you come to the tiny settlement of Pangka. Leaving Pangka, the trail climbs rapidly into a rocky crack on stone steps beside one of the streams that feed the Dudh koshi. You’ll pass the first lake, Longponga Tsho, immediately after crossing the bridge. You’ll soon reach the second lake, Taujung Tsho, before continuing for 30 minutes to the village of Gokyo. There are 8 lodges in Tokyo. The most popular walk is the stiff two-hour climb to Gokyo Ri.

As Gorak Shep has Kala Pattar, so Gokyo has Gokyo Ri. Not affected by the quake, the path to the peak crosses the stream at the north end of the village and climbs for two hours to the top of the hill. As with Kala Pattar, the most reliable weather is early in the morning, as clouds tend to roll in by mid-morning. The prevailing wisdom is to start up the mountain at first light, even if it looks cloudy. If the weather is clear, you’ll get better light in the afternoon than in the early morning. Some people watch the sunset from the peak.

It takes two days to reach Thame from Gokyo, and this route follows the edge of the Rolwaling region, which was badly affected by the earthquakes. When you set off from Gokyo, stand on the lakeshore and trace the route to the pass. The path climbs gently along the flank of Gokyo Ri. Start off on the trail to Gokyo Ri and take the lower path that climbs gently above the north shore of the lake. About three hours after leaving Gokyo, you will gain the Renjo La. Continuing on from the pass, the trail winds down a staircase of huge stone slabs. The final steep descent to Lumde follows a narrow valley clogged with giant boulders.

Your destination for the day is Thame, but the village was devastated by the 2015 earthquake. If no accommodation is available at Thame, you’ll need to continue for several more hours to reach Namche Bazzar. The first step is a 40-minute downhill walk to Marulung on the east bank of the Bhote Khosi. Below Marulung, cross to the western side of the Bhote khosi and descend for 30 minutes to Tarnga. From the chorten at the bottom of the village, there is a short ascent over the moraine damaged in the earthquakes.

If you stay overnight in Thame, you can descend to Namche Bazzar for half a day. When you cross the Thame, your trail reaches Manjo. It takes 5/6h from Thame to Manjo. The trail was short that’s why you should rest for another day to continue the trail.

On day 13, you continue your trail. There were some lodges. It indicates breakfast, lunch, or dinner. A long day later, you will be sitting in Lukla, treating yourself to a slap-up dinner and a beer you deserve, and ready to board your flight back to Kathmandu the next morning.

In the morning, you take your breakfast, and you should arrive at Lukla airport to fly to Kathmandu. It takes 40–45 minutes to reach Kathmandu from Lukla. When you arrive at Kathmandu Airport, our private transport will pick you up and transfer you to the hotel.

On day 15, you should rest in a hotel. If you want to go shopping in Thamel or anywhere else,. You spent your last night in Kathmandu. If you want to celebrate your success, you may celebrate and enjoy it.
